Below is a power point and the summary of the books I used for my Culturally Diverse Project for my Classroom Culture Course.
The reason why I chose the below books for the class was because I wanted to show students that even though we all look different from the color of our hair to the tips of toes we are also all the same. In an effort to encourage students to be friends with everyone and to not judge someone by their looks.

In It’s Okay to Be Different, Todd Parr has illustrated pictures that are fun and colorful for kids and shows them throughout the book that there is nothing wrong with being different. We can be different not only in the way we look but also in our emotions, actions, what we wear and the types of pets we have. This book will, hopefully, instill in children that being different is okay and not to worry what others think.
In the book Same, Same but Different we follow Elliot and Kailash who are pen pals from across the globe. The two boys use pictures and words in order to communicate with each other in their letters. Elliot lives in New York and Kailash lives in India. Through the characters drawings/letters we uncover how different each student’s lives are from their family to how they get to school but also the similarities. This books shows that even though the students are different they share similarities as well and become friends from across the ocean.
Bobbi Jane Kates book We’re Different, We’re the Same and We’re Wonderful is an amazing book that shows how we are all physically different from the size of our eyes and nose to the shape of our bodies and color of our skin. Though we are different physically our eyes and nose serves the same purpose they help us see and smell. This book does a great job in illustrating to students that yes, we are different, but we are also the same in other ways. That is what makes us unique and wonderful.

It is through these three books that children will be able to see the difference that they each bring to the classroom and also the similarities that they share. I hope with the books, the students will learn something new about their friends but also realize that we are all people and that our differences only makes us unique and special. My hope is that this will allow students to understand diversity as different but also the same.
